The Dual Role Of Women In the Family Economy: An Analysisof the Maslahah-Mafsadah Dilemma From the Perspective Of Maqashid Sharia

Abstract

This study aims to answer the main question, namely how do family
economic factors affect women's involvement in meeting household needs,
and how is the perspective of Maqashid Syariah in assessing this
phenomenon? The background of this study is based on the socioeconomic reality that shows the low income of husbands in families in
Pasar Atas, Bukittinggi City, which encourages women to also earn a
living through the informal sector. The novelty of this study lies in the
empirical analysis through the maqashid syariah approach that assesses
the balance between maslahat and potential mafsadat due to women's
dual roles. The method used is qualitative descriptive through in-depth
interviews with 20 female traders. The results of the study show that
women's involvement in trading activities is proven to be a response to
the family's economic deficit, but also has an impact on their limited time
for education and childcare. The contribution of this study is to present a
comprehensive understanding of the dilemma of women's roles in the
maqashid syariah framework, as well as recommending synergy of
sharia-friendly policies for women's empowerment in the informal sector.
