Islamic Normative Study On The Practice Of Gender Selection Through In Vitro Reproductive Technology

Abstract

Nowadays, the field of health, including science and technology, has developed very quickly, which is inseparable from the law. Almost every country has laws governing how doctors should behave towards their patients and research. There are various assisted reproductive technologies available in reproductive healthcare for couples or individuals who are unable to conceive naturally. These technologies include artificial insemination with in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer. The sex of the fetus can be selected through preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) methods. One of the most developed applications of genetic engineering today is sex selection. Is it moral for a person (parent) to intentionally determine the sex of their child? This study conducted qualitative research with normative juridical. The results found that sex selection in IVF (in vitro fertilitation) through the Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis method by removing other embryos is not ethically justified, except for medical indications.
