Digital Reconstruction In The Form Of Holograms: A Sharia Analysis Of The Appearance Of A Deceased Person

Abstract

As technology advances, hologram-based digital reconstruction allows one to “re-present” a deceased figure in a realistic visual form. This phenomenon raises the important question of how Shariah views this practice and whether it reflects respect for the deceased. This paper aims to analyze the view of Islamic law regarding the digital reconstruction of the dead, with reference to the law of depicting living beings, and norms related to respect for the dead. The research method used is library research with a qualitative approach through the content-analysis method of classical literature and the views of contemporary scholars regarding the representation of living beings in visual media. The results show that the use of hologram technology to display a deceased figure is unacceptable because it contradicts the guidance of Shara' and includes threatening the maintenance of religion and the maintenance of reason, and this also does not show respect for the deceased as taught by Shara' and even has the potential to eliminate the respect that should be and potentially display the disgrace of the deceased person.
